J atin,  at the insiste nce of  Ashok and their mother, Biji, agrees t o marry the be autiful Si ta (Nandita  Das) in an arranged mar riage, altho ugh he is ac tually in love  with Juli e (Alice P oon), a Chin ese-Indian . At fi rst glan ce, you see a happy middle-c lass fami ly going throu gh the normal paces of everyday l ife. Howe ver, as the  layers are slowly pee led back, w e find a simmer ing cauldron of discontent within the family,  with almo st every fa mily member l iving a lie. Bo th marriages i n the family turn out t o be emotion ally em pty, wit hout love or passion. W hile As hok is an a scetic  who has taken a vow of cel ibacy, Jatin is a handsom e ladies&amp ;#39; man who is still openly se eing Julie even after his marr iage to Sita.  Ashok has ple dged his total devotion t o a religi ous holy  man, a s wami, i n order to  purge his  life of w orldly des ires an d temptat ions. Radha , boun d by her sense of duty to he r husband, a grees to go al ong with his  wishes. As you can im agine, with bo th husbands ign oring their spo uses&# 39; emotional  and sexual need s (albe it with rea sons that are t otally o pposite from ea ch other),  it is o nly a matte r of time before R adha and Sit a look to one another  for comf ort and to  satisfy t heir own passi ons. In this e nvironm ent, it i s only  natural that S ita and Radha become fast friend s, and, i n time,  much more than that.
